The man charged with killing his sister-in-law in her west Cobb County home was rummaging through her dresser drawers looking for a Bible shortly before he allegedly shot her in the face.

Cobb police arrested Brent Jason Roth, 36, Tuesday evening, after taking him into custody for questioning.

44. Police believe the shooting happened about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

According to an arrest warrant, Roth had been living with his stepbrother, Scott Grant, and Jennifer Alice Grant since February. Roth had the run of the house, except for the master bedroom.

But on Tuesday morning Roth allegedly entered the bedroom "unannounced and without invitation and began to go through the dresser drawers asking the victim for a Bible," according to the warrant signed by Cobb police Detective J.W. Hopkins.

She kicked him out of the bedroom, but Roth came back "almost immediately asking again for a Bible," the warrant says.

She kicked him out of the bedroom again and called her husband. Scott Grant came home to check on his wife and talk to his stepbrother about 11:30 a.m. He left about noon to go to lunch.

When Scott Grant came home, about 6:15 p.m., he met Roth, who was walking out of the home in the Alexander Farms subdivision.

Scott Grant told police that Roth "was smiling and was walking quickly," the arrest warrant says.

He found his wife dead in the upstairs master bedroom. She had been shot at least once in the face with a 9 mm pistol, according to the arrest warrant.

Cobb police picked up Roth walking in the neighborhood, a community just off Barrett Parkway, near Dallas Highway, for questioning, said Officer Cassie Reece, a department spokeswoman.

Roth was arrested and charged with murder early Wednesday morning. He was being held in the Cobb County Jail.
